Understanding Religious Roots

David_Rosen

During the time of apartheid, speaker David Rosen was the Senior Rabbi of Cape Town, South Africa, home to the largest Jewish Orthodox community in the world. He later became the Chief Rabbi of Ireland, was knighted by the Pope, and made a Commander of the British Empire. He is one of the world’s most important figures in inter-religious affairs. During the apartheid, Rosen wanted his community to combat the racial conflict taking place. So, he became involved in inter-religious dialogue. Through this work, he realized that if you affirm values like human dignity, faithfulness to those values requires that you dialogue with others regardless of your differences. He believes that by isolating ourselves, we increase misunderstanding and violence, whereas fruitful inter-religious dialogue comes from faithfulness to our individual religious traditions.
